What all sources agree on
Metaplanet moved large amounts of Bitcoin into Coinbase Prime in transactions clustered around late August.
CEO Simon Gerovich has characterized the transfers as custodial and not signaling an intention to liquidate.
Metaplanet’s total Bitcoin holdings stand at approximately 43,000 BTC.
Metaplanet has proposed contributing 2,100 BTC and $2.5 million in cash to a new venture called Superplanet, a US-based, Nasdaq-listed Bitcoin treasury platform developed with Super League Enterprises, subject to a shareholder vote targeted for Q4 2026.
Where the reports disagree
1Calendar date(s) of the 2,400 BTC (~$186M) Coinbase Prime deposit
The deposits, split across multiple transactions on August 25 and August 28, represented a sizable chunk of the firm’s treasury. But they were followed almost immediately by an even larger transfer of 3,000 BTC, valued at roughly $237M, on August 29.
Metaplanet moved 2,400 BTC, worth about $186 million, into Coinbase Prime in just three hours on August 31, its third large transfer to the exchange since August 25.
What would settle it: On-chain transaction records for the Metaplanet-tagged wallet addresses and/or Metaplanet’s own disclosure of the transfer dates.
What to make of it
Treat the existence of large, repeated Metaplanet-to-Coinbase-Prime transfers, the company’s custodial explanation, its ~43,000 BTC total holdings, and the Superplanet proposal as established; do not treat any single calendar date for the specific 2,400 BTC / $186M deposit as settled until on-chain records or a company statement confirm it.
