What Is Polkadot (DOT)?
Polkadot is a layer-0 blockchain protocol designed to connect independent, purpose-built blockchains - called parachains - into a single network that shares security and can pass messages and assets between chains natively. It was founded by Ethereum co-founder and former CTO Gavin Wood, developed by the Web3 Foundation and Parity Technologies, and launched its mainnet in May 2020. Where most blockchains ask every application to build on the same shared chain, Polkadot's core idea is the opposite: let each application run its own specialized chain, and handle interoperability and shared security at the protocol level.
Polkadot's architecture centers on a Relay Chain, which handles network security, consensus, and cross-chain messaging, and the parachains that connect to it, each optimized for a specific purpose while still benefiting from the Relay Chain's shared validator set.
